Technical drawings and wiring diagrams for a vehicle

Summary

Torqueflow carries two kinds of manufacturer diagram for a vehicle, both on the same card and both covered by the same lookup.

Technical drawings are the manufacturer’s own exploded views, in colour, with torque figures and named parts. Most vehicles have between 10 and 20 of them, grouped by system.

Wiring diagrams are colour circuit diagrams, and they are specific to the version of the car in front of you. A right-hand-drive car registered in 2003 gets the right-hand-drive circuit drawn for that build date, not a diagram drawn for another market.

You open both on the vehicle, on the work order, or on the job card in the bay, and you can print either with the registration on it.

Prerequisites

• Haynes Pro data is enabled for your garage. If it is not, the card does not appear.
• The vehicle is identified for Haynes Pro service data. Identifying a vehicle is free and takes a few seconds. See Quoting with Haynes Pro repair data.
• You have the AI data access permission. Owners, managers, service advisors and technicians all have it as standard. Without it you do not see the card at all.
• Your garage has credits. A lookup on a vehicle costs 20 credits. See How credits are consumed by each feature.

Steps

Open the drawings

You can reach the same viewer from four places. Use whichever you are already looking at.

1. Vehicle record. Open the vehicle. The OE drawings and wiring diagrams card sits above Vehicle Details. Select Technical diagrams.
2. Work order. Open the work order. The same card sits with the vehicle block. Select Technical diagrams.
3. Job card in the bay. Open your job, then the Vehicle tab. Select Technical diagrams.
4. While building a quote. The card is in the standalone quote form and in the Quote Preparation section of a work order.

Confirm the cost

1. Torqueflow shows you what the lookup costs and what your balance is before anything is charged.
2. Select Open diagrams to go ahead, or Cancel to back out. Nothing is deducted until you confirm.
3. If a lookup on this vehicle is already open, the panel says the car is covered and names the time it runs until. There is no charge and no confirmation step.

The window covers every Haynes Pro lookup on that vehicle, not just drawings. If you have already pulled a repair time or a service schedule on this car in the last short while, the drawings are free. If the drawings open the window, the repair times and service data are free.

Find the drawing you need

1. The Drawings tab lists what the manufacturer holds for this vehicle, grouped by system.
2. Under each drawing, a Parts shown line names the parts in that image. Use it to tell two similar-looking drawings apart.
3. Select a drawing to open it.
4. Wiring diagrams are on the Wiring tab. See below.

Find a wiring circuit

Wiring works differently from drawings, because a car can hold hundreds of circuit diagrams and most of them are drawn for a version of the car that isn’t yours.

1. Open the Wiring tab. The search box is ready for typing straight away.
2. Search by circuit, not by car. Type what you are working on: power windows, abs, headlamp. The search looks at circuit names only, so searching for a model or a year finds nothing.
3. Circuits are listed by name. Where a circuit has more than one version for this car, the name carries a count, like Power windows (2). Where only one version survives, it opens straight away.
4. Select the circuit to open the diagram.

The chips above the list

Torqueflow already knows the car, so it uses what it knows before you type anything. Under For this car: you may see up to two chips, and they do different jobs.

1. The drive-hand chip (for example Marking left-hand-drive rows) is a marker. On a UK car it badges the left-hand-drive rows so you can see at a glance that they are not yours. It hides nothing. Select its x to stop the badging.
2. The registration-year chip (for example Registered 2003) is a real filter. Manufacturers split circuits at build dates, and this chip keeps the list to the ones drawn for your car’s date. Select its x to remove it.
3. Show all N wiring diagrams clears the date filter and shows every circuit the vehicle has.

Left-hand-drive rows are badged LHD and stay in the list on purpose. The one import that comes through the workshop this year is exactly the car that needs them.

Read a wiring diagram

1. Zoom, pan and print work the same as they do for drawings.
2. All circuits takes you back to the list.
3. The circuit name and the variant appear in the viewer and on the printed sheet, not just in the list you picked from. Three seconds after choosing, nobody remembers which variant they opened. The sheet on the bench still says.

Read the drawing

1. Zoom with the + and - controls, or the + and - keys. Press 0 to go back to 100%.
2. Pan by dragging the drawing, or with the arrow keys.
3. Select All drawings, or press Escape, to go back to the list. A second Escape from the list closes the dialog.
4. Open full screen puts the drawing in its own browser tab. On a workshop tablet you can pinch to zoom there. On a desktop the zoom controls in the dialog give you a bigger picture, so stay in the dialog unless you specifically want the drawing on its own.

Print a drawing for the bench

1. Select Print.
2. Torqueflow builds a one-page sheet carrying the registration, the vehicle, the drawing name, the date it was printed, and the Haynes Pro notice.
3. Print it, or save it as a PDF. The file is named after the registration and the drawing.

The registration on the sheet is the point of it. A printed drawing with nothing on it to say which car it belongs to gets picked up the following week and used on the wrong vehicle.

Expected Outcome

• The manufacturer’s drawings for the vehicle in front of you, with torque figures and named parts.
• The wiring circuit you asked for, in the version that matches the car, with the variant on the printed sheet.
• One charge per vehicle per window, whatever else you look up on that car in the meantime.
• A printed sheet a technician can work from, with the registration on it.

Notes

• Almost every vehicle has drawings. In a sample of 2,291 vehicle types, one had none.
• Wiring is a different story, and it is worth knowing before you go looking. How much wiring the manufacturer holds varies enormously between makes. Some models have a circuit for everything; on others most vehicle types carry none at all. A car with a full set of drawings can still have thin wiring, and that is the manufacturer’s data, not something your garage or Torqueflow can change.
• “We could not confirm” is not the same as “there is none.” If a section says we could not confirm the vehicle’s wiring, it means Haynes Pro returned nothing and we cannot tell a genuine absence from a failed read. Torqueflow tries again the next time a diagram window is opened on that car. Do not conclude the vehicle has no wiring diagrams.
• A very long circuit list may be capped. A handful of vehicles hold more circuits than the list can load. When that happens the tab says so, and what you can see is real. Search for the circuit by name rather than scrolling.
• Identifying a vehicle is free. Only the lookup itself costs credits.
• The window is per vehicle, not per day. Come back to the same car tomorrow and the next lookup opens a new window and costs 20 credits again. See How credits are consumed by each feature.
• The drawings are served through Torqueflow. You do not need a Haynes Pro login and you are not sent off to another site.

Troubleshooting

Problem: The Technical diagrams card is not on the page. Cause: Either Haynes Pro data is not enabled for your garage, or your account does not have the AI data access permission. Fix: Ask your account owner. The permission is granted in Settings. If the feature itself is off, contact us.

Problem: The panel is blank and says something I do not understand. Cause: There are several different blank states and they look similar. Fix: See Technical drawings are not showing, which tells you which one you are looking at and what to do about each.

Problem: I opened the drawings, went for lunch, and now it says the window has closed. Cause: The lookup window for that vehicle lapsed while the dialog was open. Fix: Select Reopen. That is a fresh 20 credits, so finish with a car before you leave it if you can.

Problem: The Wiring tab says we could not confirm this vehicle’s wiring. Cause: Haynes Pro returned nothing for that vehicle. That is not proof the vehicle has none. The two look identical from our side, so we say the honest thing rather than the confident one. Fix: Try again next time you open a diagram window on that car. If you know for a fact the vehicle should have wiring diagrams, contact us.

Problem: The circuit I want is not in the list. Cause: Usually the registration-year filter. Manufacturers split circuits at build dates, and if the car’s recorded date sits on the wrong side of a split, the row you want is filtered out. Fix: Select Show all wiring diagrams, or remove the year chip. If it still is not there, search a shorter word: the search matches circuit names only, so window finds more than passenger window switch.

Problem: I opened a circuit and got a diagram for the wrong side of the car. Cause: Left-hand-drive rows are badged, not hidden, so it is possible to open one. Fix: Go back to All circuits and pick the row without the LHD badge. If the only rows are LHD, the manufacturer holds no right-hand-drive version of that circuit.

Problem: Full screen shows the drawing smaller than the dialog did. Cause: A known issue on desktop. Fix: Close the tab and use the zoom controls in the dialog instead. On a tablet, full screen works properly and you can pinch to zoom.

Permissions

• The AI data access permission is required to see the card and open a lookup. Owner, manager, service advisor and technician have it by default.
